Τις συνθέσεις έγραψαν ο Duke Ellington, μαζί με τον μακροχρόνιο συνεργάτη του, Billy Strayhorn.
Ο Billy Strayhorn, πέθανε τον Μάιο του 1967, καθιστώντας το Far East Suite, ένα από τα τελευταία άλμπουμ που ηχογραφήθηκαν κατά τη διάρκεια της ζωής του και περιείχαν τις συνθέσεις του.
Το άλμπουμ κέρδισε το βραβείο Grammy το 1968 για την Καλύτερη Ορχηστρική Τζαζ ερμηνεία.
